It all started with a lot of paperwork. I started looking for an organization last fall (October 2020). I could choose between many different organizations, and I picked my organization careful. When I finally had an organization, the whole organizational part took a lot of time. I had to fill out a question sheet about me so they could find the perfect host family for me. Then my parents had to sign all the things I might want to do in Canada and allow it. In spring 2021 we had to go to Düsseldorf, Germany, for my visa. My dad and I stayed at my grandmother place, so I could see her a last time before I was going to Canada. I missed two days of school for a 10-minute appointment in the Canadian consulate. A few weeks later I had a preparation meeting with all the exchange students from into who are going to Canada. I met a kindergarten friend again at this meeting, we haven't seen each other in 9 years. She was going to Victoria for six months.
The preparation meeting was mostly about how to handle homesickness and some tips how to make friends in the start of the school year. Two returnees talked about their experience in Canada as an exchange student. When I got the mail from my organization that they found my host family, I was freaking out. It was an amazing feeling to know where I would stay from my exchange year. There was a lot of paperwork in the begging, but it was worth it. I know that they really thought about my host family placement. xx Anna
